Relationship and Health Education (RHE)
Our updated Relationships and Health Education (RHE) curriculum reflects the Department for Education’s 2026 statutory standards, with a heightened focus on preparing children for the complexities of a digital and modern world. This includes a robust approach to online wellbeing, where pupils learn to navigate AI-generated content and understand the risks of data harvesting and digital financial harms. Furthermore, we have expanded our personal safety units to provide practical, life-saving knowledge regarding water, road, and fire safety. These updates ensure that our pupils are not only technologically literate but are also equipped with the physical and digital safety skills necessary to navigate their daily lives with confidence.
Our RHE curriculum now places greater emphasis on mental resilience and body literacy. We provide pupils with the age-appropriate vocabulary to discuss emotions, including the introduction of ‘change and loss’ units to help children process grief and bereavement. To support safeguarding and healthy development, we use correct biological terminology for the human body and ensure that discussions regarding puberty begin in Lower Key Stage 2, ensuring all children are prepared before physical changes occur. As always, we maintain a policy of full transparency, working closely with parents to ensure our RHE provision is delivered with sensitivity, inclusivity, and in accordance with our community’s needs.

We believe that the teaching of Relationship Education should be shared with parents and be mutually supportive and complementary. It promotes an understanding of the range of family types and other people who contribute to providing children with the care, love and support they need to grow and develop.
Teaching about mental wellbeing is central to these subjects, especially as a priority for parents is their children’s happiness. We know that children are increasingly experiencing challenges. The new RHE content will give them the knowledge and capability to take care of themselves and receive support if problems arise.
These subjects represent a huge opportunity to help our children develop. The knowledge and attributes gained will support their own, and others’ wellbeing and attainment and help our children become happy and successful adults who make a meaningful contribution to society.
